  1. 1801-1890. English Roman Catholic theologian.
  2. While still an Anglican, he wrote a series of
  3. Tracts for the Times, which gave their name
  4. to the Tractarian Movement (subsequently
  5. called the Oxford Movement) for the revival
  6. of Catholicism. He became a Catholic 1845 and
  7. was made a cardinal 1879. In 1864 his
  8. autobiography, Apologia pro vita sua, was
  9. published. Newman, born in London, was
  10. ordained in the Church of England 1824, and
  11. in 1827 became vicar of St Mary's, Oxford.
  12. There he was influenced by the historian R H
  13. Froude and the Anglican priest Keble, and in
  14. 1833 published the first of the Tracts for
  15. the Times. They culminated in Tract 90 1841
  16. which found the Thirty-Nine Articles of the
  17. Anglican church compatible with Roman
  18. Catholicism, and Newman was received into the
  19. Roman Catholic Church in 1845. He was rector
  20. of Dublin University 1854-58 and published
  21. his lectures on education as The Idea of a
  22. University 1873. His poem The Dream of
  23. Gerontius appeared in 1866, and The Grammar
  24. of Assent, an analysis of the nature of
  25. belief, in 1870. He wrote the hymn `Lead,
  26. kindly light' 1833.
